Hmm. The key, really, to doing anything serious in space will probably require getting better ways to get off Earth and to travel around the system. I did see a bit on Nova Science Now</> about a nifty new rocket engine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VASIMR) which could make getting to the Moon and Mars from orbit (doesn't work in an atmosphere) faster and more efficient and there's I suspect other stuff out there that might give some hope that we can get to a next stage of civilization that reaches beyond our home dirt ball.
